The Open Horn
A Pan-Brass Discussion Forum

Welcome to the new Open Horn. In keeping with the recently published trombone edition of my book Time, Balance And Connections-A Universal Theory Of Brass Relativity, coming editions of the book for treble clef/valved instruments (early spring, 2010), bass clef/valved instruments (late spring, 2010)  and my new breakthrough discovery regarding overtone singing and embouchure, I now want to aim this discussion site more at serious players of all brass instruments rather than simply at trombonists.

It has recently become obvious to me that most of the existing brass forums have grown too large and are thus thoroughly dominated by amateurs and fairly young students. I have no problem with those groups of people and welcome them into this site wholeheartedly, but not as dominant members, rather as people who are looking for input from more accomplished players. As has been the case on The Open Horn since its inception in 2002, this site will remain relatively unmoderated. With the exception of serious spamming, serious scamming and the occasional outbreak of utter stupidity there will be no holds barred on this site. Be prepared to speak freely here. Use the language in which you best express yourself; be ready to have your ideas subjected to real scrutiny, and welcome in.

And...have fun.

I am.

Bet on it.

Remember...try everything; use what works. For you.

Later...

Same as the professional bulletin board except for people who do NOT attempt to make a living playing this primitive blowstick we laughingly call the trombone. Hottest thing ever big-time conservatory or a middle school somewhere in Wyoming or Yugoslavia, it makes no difference. If you are proud of your accomplishments, tell us what you are doing, when, where and what your performances are all about.

How does music affect life and society; how do life and society affect music? Why is it so hard to make a living as a musician and what can we do about it? Why don't people listen? Why aren't musicians given credits at the end of movies like drivers, sandwich makers and coat hangers ? Where do music and musicians fit in the fabric of life, and what is our value? Why do we do this?

Over in the corner furthest from the door in any good bar is where the unclassifiably interesting stuff usually happens. Opinions about damned near anything welcomed. Again...get stupid, get lost. Joe the Bartender is the sole arbiter of what goes on in his fine establishment, and the only thing that really gets him mad is willful stupidity. You've been warned...

Abandon hope all ye who enter here. Get nasty, stupid or way, way far off-topic on this forum and Joe the Bartender will escort you out into to the alley, saying "Take it outside, fellas, take it outside" while perhaps verbally whacking you upside the head a few times himself just to keep in practice. Be nice or be gone.
